FAA Orders Ground Stop at Houston International Airport After Security Incident

The NTSB is sending a team to help Indian authorities investigate a Boeing 787 crash in India earlier in the day.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop order for Houston’s George Bush International Airport halting all flights on Thursday. A woman driving a black SUV crashed through a gate and entered a secure cargo area, then fled on foot. Emergency teams responded to the security breach.

Extra caution may have been exerted after an Air India Boeing 787 headed from Ahmedabad to London crashed just after taking off earlier on Thursday. Two hundred forty-one people on board were killed as a single passenger survived. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to assist in the investigation.

Federal Aviation Administration Acting Administrator Chris Rocheleau called the Air India crash a “stark reminder” that aviation safety is a global issue. He recommended “aligning regulations, sharing critical safety data and modernizing oversight” in collaboration with aviation regulators in other countries for “safer operations, better information flows and more efficient air travel around the world.”

Flights in Houston resumed later that evening. No airport operations were damaged and no injuries reported.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Acting Administrator Rocheleau to be discerning as he oversees the FAA.
  • For air traffic controllers as they do the stressful work of directing aircraft on the ground and in the skies.
  • For wisdom for members of the Senate as they consider the confirmation of Bryan Bedford as FAA administrator.
